The concept of changing level is only a method of achieving something I have always wanted to successfully achieve but failed to do so each time. I want to achieve spaces that are ambiguous in terms of exterior and interior.

The idea I began to work with is the change of levels. I was expecting to find more unique features on site so I can use them or manipulate them in some way to form either the geometry or concept behind this project. However, this changing level is already a big concept to work with therefore this has become a main focus from the beginning of the project.

Development of the Analysis

The above 2 drawings shows the sense of hierarchy between different rooms. There is a clear sense of isolation for the servant and guest wing from the rest of the house. On the 1st floor the relationship of master bedrooms with its balcony is inverted to the relationship of the children's bedrooms with the playroom and its balcony. It may suggest a sense of parenthood, which not having children directly exposed to the natural environment as a way of showing the parents' protection for their children.

This drawing attempts to show different materials used for floor finish in Villa Mairea. An interesting finding is that stone pavings are used at places that are half sheltered and half open to the external environment. While the different floor finish of living room (tile) and sitting room (timber) reflect the different properties of materials.

The 2 drawings above show an attempt to map the position of openings on both floors. It can be seen that larger openings are located near the rooms which are commonly used by occupants (e.g. sitting room, living room, master bedrooms and children bedrooms) while smaller openings are located near the servant quadrant and guest rooms.

This is an attempt of mapping the sun path in realtion to different rooms. the servant quadrant and guest rooms would recieve a relatively short amount of early morning sun; sitting room and master bedrooms would recieve a relatively long period of morning and early afternoon sun; living room, winter garden and studio would recieve a long period (perhaps the longest direct sun access out of all other rooms) of afternoon and evening sun; while the dining room recieves evening sun.
